I only do 8-1/2 x 11 LOs, so I can print them for my albums (I have 26).

May I just have squares in the rectangular LO?

Yep that size would be fine and putting squares of any sort on the layout will be fine, it can be square papers, frames or anything as long as the predominate shape is square
