Here is my step 2.
 Used cookie cutter shapes for cutting the curved pieces. Some of the shapes were added to the PSE program - so not sure where they came from. Enlarged them a bit then made a paper in a darker color of the background paper and did a clipping mask for each shape. Set the opacity down to 50% and slide them under the shapes to make the shadows. I kept the shape on the left side with a straight side as I love the white swirls on the paper edge.
