I wanted to alert you to a situation with 4shared. All free accounts now show a related files window. So, when someone goes to download a file, they see other files that may be similar in name to the one they are downloading. The related files include files from any publisher and all that matters is the file names may have a similar phrase in them.

That being said...I ran into a situation with a student in one of my classes (I'll let her chime in here if she wants) where she sent me a link for some homework she was having trouble with. So, I went to 4shared to download the link and the related files window was full of porn thumbnails!! The porn images did not belong to the student in my class, but were posted by other 4shared users and included in the related files window because the filenames had a similar phrase in them as the file I was downloading (the student's first name).

I contacted the student and told her about it. She was upset as I'm sure many of us would be...the files were not hers!! She contacted 4shared and was told that the only way to remove the related files window was to upgrade to a paid plan. So, she is basically stuck with porn being included on the download page for her files unless she upgrades.

I wanted you to all be aware of what can show up in the related files window because I know so many of use 4shared. The other thing I hate is that sometimes the related files window is down below where I don't have to look at it and other times it's other places where I can't avoid it. Very frustrating! :eek1

I've noticed those windows with the files in them, but never clicked on them!
How horrible for your student!!

Most files don't show a thumbnail preview in there, but jpg files do!

Thanks for the warning Andrea, seems like more and more pop up windows in there as well.

Thanks Andrea, for posting this warning. Yes, it was my file page, and I am still in the process of trying to get the "Related Files" removed from download pages.

Just so you all know, the only thing I use 4shared for is to upload/download my scrap files. I have a blog and I need 4shared for the downloads. However, I think I am going to have to look around for something else.

When you post a download for others, click on it and see where it leads you. I have notice this stuff on lots of download pages. So be careful.

Hey, I just got a message from 4shared saying they removed the offensive files...so now all that shows up in the related box are some other misc files that are not offensive! Small battles are worth fighting!

Congratulations on winning that battle!! Your fight made it better for SO many people!! I, thankfully, hadn't come across any offensive material yet but can only imagine how many others have had to! Thank you for fighting that fight!! :D

Good for you Andrea!! You go girl!!!

So if you have a paid service with them these files will not come up? And your files will not show up on someone else's downloads? Is that right? I had a situation like that recently. One of my CT did some quick pages for me and since she named them "CS_" the two files I just put up for freebies showed up in the related links. They were freebies so it wasn't a big deal but they ended up being downloaded over 20 times before I ever released them on my blog. Just really made me mad.

Hi, 4shared said "if you have a paid account, there would be no related files on your download page."

My feeling is that you should not have to pay for a free service in order to have your pages porn free and piracy free.

I have also heard of things like this happening. I know they post the related files, but there are times when even the name of it is offensive. I know someone who clicked on one of them and got a lot more than she bargained for. Guess the sickos will try to put that stuff out there anywhere they can get it!!!

I guess the way to protect your files then it to put a password on them for downloading.. I know it's pain in the neck but if 4shared is doing this then I think it may be necessary...I probably need to check my 4shared account.. I bet my qp's I zipped for exchanges are still there and I'll be annoyed if they are getting downloaded...time to remove them! ugh!!!

They said the download page for your files will not show related links if you have a paid service. I don't know that it will stop your files from showing up under another person's related files window. We all need to password protect them to be safe. There is alittle box on the file info page that you can check to "allow downloads for publisher only" which is a huge pain to do for each and every file and then have to uncheck each time you want to share it. I think its' best to just put them in password protect folders. :confused1:

Thanks for the info Andrea. I would be very upset, just like your student is I'm sure. I gave also noticed, that the files move around on the screen, and this is sometimes very confusing.
