Heritage Challenge

http://www.godigitalscrapbooking.com/photopost/data/500/OTBDS_ASp9.png

Welcome! So glad you decided to play!!! The Heritage Challenge is one where we can explore techniques, use older picture to catalog our heritage, or in this instance I thought it would be fun to take a newer picture and make it look old and then use it on our layout!!

So your challenge if you choose to accept it is to use this Tutorial (http://www.wacom-asia.com/technical/photoshop/photoshop.html)to age a photo of your choice. Then use that photo in a heritage page. (You are free to use another tutorial to create a vintage scratched photo if you have one, this one looked relatively clear in its instructions, so that’s why I picked it but if you find one that is easier for you or you know how to do it, you are welcome to do it your way. I am just looking for a newer picture that has been aged!)

Everyone gets a bonus for participating!! Yup that’s FREE stuff!!!

Have fun and good luck!!

Additional info:

(1) Your layout can only be used for this challenge.
(2) Your layout also counts as one entry towards the July 2012 Scrappin' 7 Challenge.
(3) Use of GDS products is strongly encouraged and greatly appreciated.
(4) Please post your layout in the Heritage Challenge Gallery (http://www.godigitalscrapbooking.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=1094)
(5) Come back here and post what you created, and link it to the gallery, so we can all leave you some love!
(6) HAVE FUN!

This challenge runs through July 31, 2012

I can't wait to see your creations!!!

Is there a specific theme, technique, or inspiration this month or do you just want a heritage page? Love the idea of the challenge, just want to verify before I start thinking about it too much.

Ok here is mine!!! I guess I should go first seeing as I am hosting the challenge!!

It was the first time that I have made a picture look old with this tutorial. It was a challenge because the tut was for PS and I have PSE9 but I think I got thru it and it came out pretty good!!!

This was a fun challenge. I use Paint Shop Pro x2 so I had to revise the tutorial a little.

I had to alter the tutorial as well since I use an old version of Photoshop. This was really fun to do though. Thanks for the challenge.

Great job! The picture makes me sad though :-( We are a military family and have lost many friends and people my husband has worked with thru the years....this picture is very powerful. You certainly did it justice!

Christine, I love challenges that drive one to learn something new. Here's my take on the challenge. This is my own photo, to which I have added a sketch treatment. Once the piece was finished, I flattened and added the vintage wash, using a couple of tutorials and a wood brush. I started with your tutorial, but it didn't work for me since I was altering the entire page and not just the photo edge. Thanks for hosting.

I could not follow the tutorial unfortunally, but I have this plugin to make things a little grungy ;-) (I also used it to make my background)

Love Heritage pages. So glad to see this challenge.

I took a photo taken this May and changed it to black and white. Then did an enhancement on it to sharpen the contrast.

I chose Created by Jill's Changes Add-on kit as it has the deep red/burgandy and turquoise colors associated with the Southwest. The bare branch, pleated button and striped swirl were parts of the kit that really look like they belong in the SW. The font: Fletch Extended looks like many signs and labels you see here.

I did lightly re-color the white rose in the kit. I add a touch of the red-burgandy to it [at 30%] to give it a tea-dyed look.

Thank you for hosting this fantastic challenge, Christina! Unfortunately, I couldn't follow the tut in PSE either, so I hunted around a bit and found this really easy to follow tut: http://ldgsherar.deviantart.com/art/Vintage-Tutorial-Eng-77255924

Anyway, here's my page:

I have to say Andrea, I played with the tutorial you found and loved it as well. I saved a copy for next time I want to do a layout and make it look vintage. Thank you.

You're so welcome, Suzette! I loved this tut because it gives plenty of scope to play around with the settings until you get the look that's just right for your photo. I particularly loved the trick with the vertical lines! :)

Thanks to Andrea and her wonderful link to 'aging' a photo, I now understand what this challenge is all about. So, I went back to my original page and pulled the photo out and gave it a 'vintage' look. I turned it to sepia color, then ran the texturizer on it twice to give it an older look. So, this is what it looks like now:

http://www.godigitalscrapbooking.com/photopost/data/1094/Tea_In_New_Mexico_sepia.jpg (http://www.godigitalscrapbooking.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=109449&title=tea-in-new-mexico-se&cat=1094)

Compare that to the first page and you can really see the difference:

http://www.godigitalscrapbooking.com/photopost/data/1094/Tea_In_New_Mexico_copy.jpg (http://www.godigitalscrapbooking.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=109385&title=tea-in-new-mexico-2012&cat=500)

I love the first page's photo in black and white as it fits so well with the colors in some of the elements. But, to really meet the goal of this challenge, the second one done is sepia is the correct technique to use. Now... I am LOL as I realized as I previewed this post how well the sepia one picked up the browns in the page.... I will remember this trick next time I need a 'vintage' photo from a modern one. Thanks all.
