Questions about TOU/Personal use

Okay, this is a rather difficult question and I realize that different designers may answer it differently.

So, my BIL died and I would like to make a bookmark to be given away at the memorial. Can I use my scrapbooking materials or do I need specifically to go and purchase some CU products?

I would not be selling anything -- it is just a gift for my sister.

My thought is that it would be fine to do, because it is flattened and printed. If in doubt, though, I contact the designer(s) directly and ask.
